US revokes Brazil ambassador's visa

The United States has revoked the visa of a senior Brazilian diplomat, a move that escalates a diplomatic dispute between the two nations. A U.S. official stated that Washington made the decision due to Brazil's delay in approving a new U.S. ambassador. "We believe the Brazilian government owes us a prompt and positive response to our request," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official clarified that revoking the visa does not equate to expelling the diplomat from the United States.

This latest friction arises after Brazil denied visas to two U.S. officials who sought to meet with election authorities last month. A Brazilian diplomatic source cited the "risk of political exploitation" as the reason for the refusal. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department had previously stated that the officials intended to visit Brazil to discuss "election integrity, religious freedom, and freedom of expression" with government representatives and religious leaders.

The visa denials occurred after right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims about the insecurity of the country's electronic voting system. These claims mirrored those of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who falsely asserted that widespread fraud cost him the 2020 election. In 2023, election authorities banned Flavio Bolsonaro's father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, from running for president due to similar statements made while he was in office. He was later convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state after losing the 2022 election and is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence under house arrest.
