US Revokes Citizenship for Naturalized Individual Who Hid Key Information

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is actively enforcing a regulation aimed at revoking the citizenship of naturalized individuals who concealed critical information during their immigration proceedings. This initiative seeks to safeguard the integrity of the U.S. legal system and recently led to a naturalized citizen losing his status.

A formal order from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee revoked the citizenship of Sead Miljkovic, a Bosnian migrant. The court found that Miljkovic had misrepresented his true identity to enter the United States in 1996. He had fraudulently obtained his citizenship in 2007 by failing to disclose an outstanding international arrest warrant.

"This administration has prioritized protecting the inviolability of U.S. citizenship," stated Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Civil Division. "If a foreigner commits heinous acts and comes here to try to evade the consequences, we will not allow it." The DOJ's regulation stipulates that naturalization is granted illegally if the applicant lied about or concealed relevant criminal history. This provision allows for the stripping of U.S. citizenship from those who lack the moral character required by federal law.

Judicial authorities have determined that any false testimony before government officials permanently invalidates past naturalization processes. The federal government conducts audits led by specialized denaturalization units. Miljkovic, also known by the alias Sead Dukic, previously served in the security forces of the Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia. An INTERPOL notice indicates his involvement in physical assaults against civilians opposing the regional government in June 1994.
