US security alert in Mexicali linked to Sinaloa Cartel faction's 'bloodbath' threats

The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana issued a security alert for Mexicali, Baja California, suspending consular activities on Tuesday due to a "potential threat," prompting concerns about escalating cartel violence.

U.S. media outlets, citing a security expert, linked the alert to threats from the "Los Rusos" faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Ed Calderón, a security consultant and former Baja California State Police agent, told The California Post that the faction has been causing havoc and attempting to target law enforcement officials. He suggested that "Los Rusos" might be retaliating against recent operations by Mexican and U.S. authorities that have disrupted their activities, including the seizure of 120 kilograms of fentanyl pills on August 20.

"The faction of Los Rusos has been causing havoc, reaching even to try to locate and execute people who work for the state police forces," Calderón stated. He warned that American travelers and U.S. government employees could become collateral victims, as U.S. facilities are often located near Mexican government buildings.

The U.S. notification advised its citizens to avoid government buildings, seek shelter if an incident occurs, and remain vigilant. The Canadian embassy in Mexico City also shared the U.S. alert and provided similar recommendations to its citizens as a precautionary measure.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the alert, stating it was based on information from U.S. agencies regarding the "possibility of a criminal group." However, she added that no further details were available. The federal Security Cabinet later issued a statement indicating that no specific or imminent risks had been identified thus far.
