US Senate passes sweeping Russia sanctions Bill

The U.S. Senate has approved a sweeping sanctions bill aimed at crippling Russia's energy revenues. The legislation, which passed Friday, seeks to cut off the financial resources powering Russia's war effort.

Republican Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed strong support for the bill. He stated that the sanctions could compel Russia to negotiate an end to the conflict with Ukraine. Risch emphasized the bill's potential to make a decisive impact beyond battlefield achievements, directly targeting the flow of cash funding President Putin's military operations.

The bill proposes imposing tariffs of up to 500 percent on Russian energy imports, including gas and oil. Furthermore, it mandates 100 percent tariffs on the five primary importing countries of Russian gas and oil, which include China and India. The legislation also includes new sanctions specifically targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin and other high-ranking officials.

Following its passage in the Senate, the bill will be sent to the House of Representatives. However, a vote in the House is not anticipated until early September, following the conclusion of the congressional summer recess.
