US Strategic Priorities Shift Amid China Expansion, Amid Concerns Over Arms Stocks

Concerns are mounting in Washington that Russia and China could exploit perceived US military resource limitations, particularly a potential depletion of Patriot interceptors, to advance their strategic interests. US officials cited by The New York Times suggest that Moscow and Beijing are closely monitoring American military capabilities.

There are worries that Russia might increase pressure on Ukraine or along NATO's eastern flank, while China could assess opportunities to escalate actions against Taiwan. However, public evidence confirming such decisions by Russia or China is lacking, and authorities in Moscow and Beijing have not commented on these reports.

The White House has refuted claims of insufficient Patriot missile reserves. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the US military possesses the necessary resources to fulfill any presidential orders. Patriot interceptors are among the most sought-after air defense systems for the US military, deployed to protect bases in the Middle East and support Ukraine.

Meanwhile, relations between Ukraine and Iran have soured after an incident in the Caspian Sea. Iran alleges that a commercial ship was struck in an attack attributed to Ukraine, resulting in casualties. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces targeted vessels involved in transporting Iranian military cargo, as well as a Russian military ship. Tehran denies these claims, asserting the ship was used solely for commercial purposes and that Iran is not a party to the Russia-Ukraine war.
