US strikes Iran’s Larak Island as Revolutionary Guards retaliate against American targets in Jordan

The United States has resumed strikes on Iran after a month-long pause, targeting Larak Island in an operation Washington linked to preparations for a possible attack in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for the US military’s Central Command, said forces from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had been observed preparing to launch rockets loaded with naval mines. The US military said the strike followed that activity. Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that two people were killed and two wounded.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards said they retaliated on Monday by attacking American military targets in Jordan with ballistic missiles and drones. Tehran said the strikes targeted technical and maintenance facilities, as well as aircraft stationed at two military bases.

Jordan’s military said it shot down eight missiles that entered its airspace, but did not identify their origin. The exchange extended the confrontation beyond Iran and the immediate area of the Larak strike.

Washington also plans to increase economic pressure on Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department would announce new sanctions every week, initially focusing on Iranian banks. He said another bank could be sanctioned during the week.
