US support for Iran war hits lowest point since conflict began

American public support for the war in Iran has fallen to its lowest level since the conflict's inception, according to a recent survey. The war, which began on February 28 with joint U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, has consistently seen less than 40% approval among U.S. residents.

The poll also revealed that 69% of respondents feel President Donald Trump has not clearly articulated the objectives of the intervention. This unpopular foreign policy stance could weigh on Trump and the Republicans as they seek to defend their narrow majorities in both houses of Congress in the upcoming November elections.

To date, the war has resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. soldiers and thousands of people in Iran and Lebanon. Trump had pledged during his 2024 election campaign to avoid lengthy conflicts and initially believed the war in Iran would last only four to five weeks.

Despite the low approval for the war, a separate poll conducted over the weekend showed a three-percentage-point increase in Trump's overall approval rating, bringing it to 37%. A White House spokesperson, Olivia Wales, stated that the administration does not give weight to such polls and that Trump's decisions will not be dictated by fluctuating survey results. The primary objective, she reiterated, remains preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
