US support for Iran war hits record low as Trump approval stagnates

US public support for the war with Iran has hit a new low, with only 31% of Americans backing the military action, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. This decline, particularly among Republicans, contributes to President Donald Trump's persistently low approval ratings.

The poll, which closed on Monday, found that support for the conflict has remained below 40% since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. The decrease in Republican support, from 77% in March to 69%, is a significant factor in the overall drop.

Furthermore, a July poll indicated that 69% of Americans felt Trump had not clearly articulated the objectives of the US military involvement in Iran. The war appears to be a significant drag on Trump's public standing, with his approval rating in the White House at 33% for the second consecutive survey. This figure matches the lowest approval rating recorded during his first term in December 2017.

The president has been clear that he is going to see the Iranian nuclear weapons threat come to an end. He will see that objective be completed one way or another.

Adding to the public's sentiment, 83% of Americans believe the war will continue for an extended period, an increase from 80% earlier this month. The poll surveyed 1,215 US adults nationwide and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
