US to rotate aircraft carrier in Middle East amid deployment concerns

The United States is preparing to rotate its aircraft carrier in the Middle East, sending the USS George Washington to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. The USS Abraham Lincoln has reportedly been deployed for over 250 days, with approximately 200 of those days spent at sea without a port call. The carrier's deployment began in November but was redirected to the Middle East in January following the US war against Iran. This extended operational period has led to concerns about the conditions faced by the crew.

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal has voiced significant concerns, citing alleged shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health among sailors, deck safety problems, and disruptions to mail delivery. Republican Rep. Marlin Stutzman has also indicated an intention to seek updates from the Pentagon regarding the ship's conditions.

However, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has refuted these reports, describing them as "completely misrepresented." Speaking to reporters, Hegseth praised the sailors' resilience in difficult circumstances and asserted that the military provides necessary resources for ships, crews, and commanders. Officials also indicated that the replacement of the Lincoln was planned before the recent concerns were raised, suggesting it aligns with an existing deployment schedule rather than being a direct response to the allegations.

The arrival of the USS George Washington is expected to provide much-needed relief for the USS Abraham Lincoln and its crew, marking one of the US Navy's longest continuous operational stretches. American naval forces remain heavily committed to the Middle East during the conflict with Iran.
