US tourists tip more generously in German restaurants, study finds

In Germany's hospitality sector, a noticeable difference in tipping habits has emerged, with U.S. tourists generally leaving more generous tips than their German counterparts. Emilia Bieber, who operates two "Art Cafés" in Assmannshausen and Rüdesheim, observes that American guests typically tip around 20% via card payment, while German customers often leave about 10%.

This disparity is largely explained by the differing wage structures in the service industry between the two countries. In the United States, it's common for lower base wages in gastronomy to be supplemented by higher tips, a practice that helps servers achieve a living income. A former waitress in Brooklyn highlighted this, stating she couldn't do her job on hourly wages alone.
