US trade chief sees no economic impact from new tariffs on 60 partners

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer asserted that recently imposed American tariffs on 60 trading partners, the European Union among them, are unlikely to cause any significant economic impact. Speaking to Fox News, Greer dismissed concerns that the tariffs would influence the Federal Reserve's upcoming decisions.

"I don't think it will have any effect at all," Greer stated. He elaborated that the tariffs target a limited group of nations and largely mirror existing measures. Therefore, he anticipates no economic repercussions beyond what the U.S. has already experienced. The tariffs were enacted following the expiration of a broader 10 percent global tariff implemented in February.

Greer justified the tariffs by stating that the targeted 60 trading partners have failed to implement and enforce what the U.S. describes as a ban on goods produced through forced labor. The administration also plans to continue a separate investigation into industrial overcapacity among 16 key trading partners, including the EU, China, Vietnam, and Mexico. Greer indicated that the U.S. would propose further tariffs once this investigation concludes.

It is a series of tariffs that covers a small group - it is not the whole world. Many of the rates are very similar to each other, so it should not have any economic effect that differs from what we have already experienced.
