Using cunning against pickpockets

Pickpockets are employing increasingly sophisticated tricks to target tourists in crowded areas, turning the tables on unsuspecting visitors. Common tactics include the "lift-up trick," where a stranger bets they can guess a tourist's weight, only to lift them and steal their belongings in the process. Other methods involve staged incidents like spilling drinks or bumping into people to create a diversion for theft.

Organized petty crime groups are constantly devising new methods, but their core strategy remains consistent: distraction and theft. Often, one individual distracts the target while another makes the grab, with a third person sometimes involved in facilitating the getaway of the stolen goods. This coordinated approach aims to maximize opportunities in busy tourist spots.

However, many tourists are no longer as naive as they appear. They are taking precautions, such as wearing valuables securely on their person, opting for crossbody bags over backpacks, and avoiding dubious currency exchange services. Many also choose to leave non-essential items in their hotel safes or even at home.

Some tourists have even started to outsmart the thieves themselves. The "fake wallet" tactic is gaining popularity, where a decoy wallet filled with play money is carried in a back pocket. While the thief snatches this fake wallet, the tourist's actual cash, credit cards, and phone remain safely secured closer to their body. Another ruse involves disguising valuables in everyday shopping bags, like those from discount supermarkets, making them less appealing targets for opportunistic thieves.
