USR proposes government rotation with PSD until 2028 to end political crisis

Romania's interim Defense and Transport Minister, Radu Miruță, has put forward a proposal for a government rotation with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) until 2028 to resolve the country's political crisis. The plan, presented by the Save Romania Union (USR), suggests dividing the governance period between USR and PSD based on an agreement or parliamentary weight.

Miruță stated that USR is the only party offering a solution to unblock negotiations. "Let's divide the time from now until this Parliament's mandate ends in 2028. Either in two-year terms, or proportionally to the number of votes. For a period, we govern, together with PNL and UDMR, and for the other period, proportionally to PSD's votes, PSD governs," he explained. He added that USR would agree to support a PSD-led government under these conditions.

However, Miruță criticized PSD for accepting the idea in principle but demanding to lead the initial phase of governance, which he believes complicates negotiations. He also pointed out the inconsistency of PSD criticizing measures adopted by a previous government in which they were participants. Miruță dismissed accusations that USR is responsible for blocking discussions, arguing that if PSD and PNL had a solid agreement, they could form a majority without USR's support.

The statements precede consultations called by President Nicușor Dan with leaders of major parties to discuss solutions for forming a new government.
