Businessman Vasile Tofan Nominated as Moldova's Next Prime Minister

Moldova's President Maia Sandu has nominated Vasile Tofan, a figure with a strong background in business and investment, to serve as the country's next prime minister. The nomination follows the resignation of the previous premier, Alexandru Munteanu, who stepped down on July 3, citing a conflict with his principles.

Tofan brings a wealth of international experience to the role. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Public Management with honors from Erasmus University in Rotterdam and a Master's in Business Administration with honors from Harvard Business School. He is fluent in Romanian, English, Dutch, French, Ukrainian, and Russian.

His career includes roles as a consultant at Monitor Group in Amsterdam, where he advised clients in the consumer goods and healthcare sectors across Europe and Nigeria. He later served as a senior manager for Corporate Strategy and Alliances at Philips in Amsterdam, focusing on strategy, business development, and mergers and acquisitions.

From 2010 to 2012, while studying at Harvard, Tofan founded and led Ovia Health, a health tech startup that grew to over 20 million users before being acquired by Labcorp. More recently, from 2011 until July of this year, he was a senior partner at Horizon Capital in Kyiv, overseeing approximately $1.8 billion in assets. His work there involved managing the full investment cycle, coordinating investments in various companies, and playing a role in significant transformations and capital raising efforts.
