UTME candidates, travellers abducted in Benue attack

The ongoing insecurity crisis in Nigeria has once again cast a dark shadow, this time disrupting the educational aspirations of young Nigerians. Passengers, including candidates preparing for the crucial Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), were abducted along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road in Benue State. This brazen attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, saw suspected bandits intercept a Benue Links bus, forcing most of its occupants into the bush.

The passengers were mainly young persons heading to Otukpo to sit for the JAMB examination scheduled for today (Thursday).

This incident is a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of banditry and kidnapping that continues to plague our nation, particularly along critical transport routes. The victims, primarily young men and women en route to sit for their examinations, represent a generation whose future is constantly jeopardized by these criminal elements. I am in Otukpo now with all my team and DPOs who are here in the bush, and I am heading the operation.

While the Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, has assured that a rescue operation is in full swing, the incident also raises questions about adherence to safety protocols. Reports suggest the Benue Links driver may have violated the company's policy against night travel, potentially increasing the vulnerability of the passengers. What happened was that one Benue Links bus carrying passengers coming to Otukpo was stopped and attacked by hoodlums, and 14 passengers were kidnapped, but one was able to escape.
