Uttarakhand plans Namo Bharat link from Meerut to Rishikesh

The Uttarakhand government is moving forward with plans to extend the Namo Bharat high-speed train service, proposing a new corridor from Meerut's Modipuram station to Rishikesh's Lakshman Jhula. This ambitious 150-kilometer project aims to drastically reduce travel times and stimulate economic growth, particularly in tourism.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the plan, stating that the expansion would significantly enhance connectivity between Uttarakhand and the Delhi National Capital Region. He emphasized that the service would provide fast, safe, and modern transport for pilgrims, tourists, and local residents, giving a "new direction to Uttarakhand’s connectivity."

The proposed route will span 72 kilometers in Uttar Pradesh and 78 kilometers in Uttarakhand, passing through key areas like Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, and Haridwar. Currently, the road journey from Delhi to Rishikesh takes five to six hours. With the Namo Bharat trains capable of speeds up to 160 kmph, this travel time is projected to be halved to two-and-a-half to three hours.

This rail project was discussed and agreed upon in principle by stakeholders including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). A detailed project report survey is slated to commence shortly. Alongside this, the Uttarakhand cabinet approved several other policy decisions, including measures to improve cattle breeds, support insurance for horses and mules during the Char Dham Yatra, and declare the state fully literate.
