Uvira Faces Surge in Violence: Four Dead, Several Injured in Four Days

The city of Uvira in South Kivu is experiencing a worrying escalation of urban violence, with a citizen movement reporting at least four armed incidents between August 1 and 4, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries. The platform "Lutte contre les antivaleurs en RDC" (MCLA-RDC) issued a statement Tuesday alerting to the deteriorating security situation across several neighborhoods.

According to MCLA-RDC, the recent events include targeted shootings and armed robberies. On August 1, a woman was reportedly shot in the Kavimvira neighborhood. The following day, a man's body was discovered in the Murambia area of the Mulongwe-Kasenga neighborhood. In the night of August 3-4, a shooting in the Kabindula neighborhood resulted in the death of one young man and serious injury to another, who was attempting to resist an armed robbery.

Michael Kiza, spokesperson for MCLA-RDC, described the situation as "unacceptable" and urged provincial authorities and security services to take immediate action. "The protection of people and their property is a fundamental obligation of the state," Kiza stated, emphasizing the need for rapid intervention to restore a sense of security among residents.

The movement advocates for the implementation of effective patrols to prevent further criminal acts and rebuild public confidence. As of the report, city authorities had not yet issued an official statement regarding the incidents. The surge in violence has instilled significant fear among Uvira's inhabitants.
