UWI investigating cybersecurity alert

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona campus is investigating a potential cybersecurity issue after receiving an alert about ransomware claims.

In a press release issued Wednesday, the university clarified that there is currently no confirmed evidence of a breach affecting its information technology environment, systems, or any leaked university data. Despite the lack of confirmed evidence, The UWI is treating the matter with extreme seriousness.

"As a precaution, we are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. Our incident response plan is active, and we are working with cybersecurity experts and regional authorities," the university stated. Technical teams across the various UWI campuses are actively engaged in investigating the situation. Their efforts include reviewing systems, searching for indicators of compromise, and verifying the university's overall readiness to handle such threats.

The university has urged all members of its community to remain vigilant. They are advised to avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening unknown attachments. Any unusual system activity or suspicious messages should be promptly reported to the campus IT helpdesk. The proactive measures aim to mitigate any potential risks and ensure the security of the university's digital infrastructure.
