Uzbekistan faces Colombia in historic 2026 World Cup debut

Uzbekistan embarks on a historic journey as they face Colombia in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico City on Thursday, June 18. This marks the first time the Central Asian nation has reached the prestigious tournament.

Colombia's coach, Nestor Lorenzo, acknowledges Uzbekistan's debut status but emphasizes that no opponent should be underestimated in a major tournament. "The World Cup shows that there are no small teams and no opponents to be underestimated," Lorenzo stated, according to FIFA's official website. He highlighted Uzbekistan's strong recent results, skilled coach, quality players, and organized playing style as key challenges for his team.

Uzbekistan secured their World Cup spot by finishing in the top two of their Asian qualifying group, becoming the first nation from Central Asia to achieve this feat. Captain Eldor Shomurodov, a forward for Istanbul Basaksehir, was crucial to their qualification, contributing five goals and four assists.

In contrast, Colombia enters their seventh World Cup appearance with considerable experience. After missing the Qatar 2022 tournament, they aim to replicate their best performance, a quarter-final finish in 2014. The squad is led by seasoned players like James Rodriguez and Luis Díaz.
