Uzbekistan's FC Bunyodkor receives government aid amid financial crisis

FC Bunyodkor, a prominent football club in Uzbekistan, is receiving crucial financial assistance from the government to avert a serious crisis that threatened its participation in the Uzbekistan Super League. The club announced on August 1 that it had been allocated 5 billion soums, approximately $416,200, under a presidential decree aimed at supporting sports through business engagement.

This intervention comes after Bunyodkor's critical financial situation led to its failure to appear for a league match on July 30. The club cited a lack of funds for essential travel expenses, including tickets, hotel accommodation, and meals, for its delegation heading to Navoi. Consequently, Bunyodkor was handed a forfeit defeat, and the Professional Football League (PFL) warned of potential expulsion from the league if such an incident recurred.

Adding to its financial woes, Bunyodkor is under a FIFA transfer ban due to an unpaid debt to former star player Rivaldo. The club had a five-year repayment agreement with FIFA, which it upheld until the beginning of 2026. However, the termination of financial support by its primary sponsor, the state-owned energy company Uzbekneftegaz, prevented Bunyodkor from making its scheduled May payment, leading to Rivaldo filing a new complaint with FIFA.

The club acknowledged its difficulties but expressed determination to overcome the crisis, highlighting its history, infrastructure, and academy. Preparations are underway to expedite a second installment of state funding and to secure a new sponsor. Bunyodkor currently sits 10th in the 16-team Super League standings.
