Valdemar Aims to Bring Michelle Bolsonaro Back to Lead PL Mulher, Hopes for Campaign Role

Valdemar Costa Neto, president of Brazil's Liberal Party (PL), is actively seeking the return of Michelle Bolsonaro to lead the party's women's wing, PL Mulher. This move follows gestures of reconciliation between her and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.

Costa Neto stated his intention to speak with Michelle next week, expressing hope for her return to the PL Mulher presidency, a post she resigned from last month. He noted that state presidents of PL Mulher are urging her comeback and do not want a replacement. The party also hopes she will run for the Senate in the Federal District, a decision Michelle has indicated depends on her caregiving routine for former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest.

Michelle Bolsonaro has declared her priority is her husband's health. However, Costa Neto believes she will participate in the party's campaigns, including Flávio's, and will be consulted on all decisions, such as the selection of a vice-presidential candidate. Flávio Bolsonaro, who has struggled to gain traction with female voters, is seeking a female running mate to improve his image, especially after facing public criticism from Michelle.

While a joint ticket of Flávio and Michelle is not currently planned, Costa Neto believes the PL will secure a national alliance by the August 5 deadline for conventions. Potential allies include Republicanos and the União Brasil-PP federation. The vice-presidential candidate would then be nominated by the allied party. Costa Neto emphasized that the ideal vice-presidential candidate must have a strong electoral base and be able to attract votes, considering nationally recognized figures but noting that some, like Senator Tereza Cristina, have expressed disinterest.
