Valdimar Gunnarsson Retires After Long Career in Sports

Valdimar Gunnarsson, a physical education teacher and project manager for the "Allir með" (Everyone With) initiative, has concluded his final workday and was celebrated with a grand farewell ceremony at the Sports Center.

The event honored Gunnarsson's extensive career in sports, which included managing the UMFÍ youth sports festival in Vesturbyggð 20 years ago, serving as the general secretary of UMSK for many years, and most recently, his three-year tenure as project manager for "Allir með." This initiative aimed to introduce sports to young participants with various challenges and their guardians.

To commemorate his departure, the sales area of the Sports Center on Engjavegur was transformed into a game zone inspired by the "Star Games" that Gunnarsson organized across the country for the past three years. The celebration was marked by significant enthusiasm.

Despite retiring from his full-time role, Gunnarsson stated he is not leaving the sports movement entirely. He plans to manage an event at the UMFÍ youth sports festival this summer and ensure the "Allir með" marketing campaign reaches its successful conclusion. Thelma Dögg Grétarsdóttir, sports representative for the Sports Association of the Disabled, will succeed him in his project manager role.
