Valencia joins Caicedo in Argentina, eyes goal record

Ecuadorian forward Enner Valencia is set to join Argentine club Boca Juniors, adding another Ecuadorian presence to the league alongside Jordy Caicedo of Huracán. Both strikers are now in contention to break Jaime Ayoví's long-standing record for the most goals scored by an Ecuadorian player in a single season or tournament within Argentine football.

Jaime Ayoví, known as 'La Yoya,' holds the record with 26 goals across two stints at Godoy Cruz. His best single-season performance in Argentina yielded nine goals during the 2014 Clausura tournament. While Jordy Caicedo has already matched Ayoví's seasonal goal tally, the pursuit of the overall record continues.

Caicedo scored eight goals for Huracán in the Apertura tournament and later matched Ayoví's nine-goal season in the Clausura. Now, Valencia, who recently departed Pachuca in Mexico, arrives at Boca Juniors with a career total of 239 goals for club and country. He has signed an 18-month contract and will have the opportunity to surpass Ayoví's record within this period.
