Valentin Ceaușescu, Steaua’s ‘man in the shadows,’ meets golden-generation legends at a restaurant

Valentin Ceaușescu, the eldest son of Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu, has appeared in recent images at a restaurant table with four of Steaua Bucharest’s most recognisable names. Gabi Balint posted the photographs on Facebook, showing Ceaușescu alongside Balint, Marius Lăcătuș, Victor Pițurcă and Tudorel Stoica.

The gathering reunited Ceaușescu with several men linked to Steaua’s golden period in the 1980s. Balint, Lăcătuș and Tudorel Stoica belonged to the team that won the European Cup in 1986 after defeating FC Barcelona in the final in Seville. Pițurcă was also an important figure at the club during that era.

Ceaușescu’s presence has again drawn attention to his relationship with the military club. He is widely recognised as the “man in the shadows” behind Steaua’s success, having been involved in the sporting world as the Bucharest side reached the summit of European football.

His public appearances have remained rare since the communist regime fell. One previous appearance reported by the press came in November 2025, at the premiere of a documentary about Ladislau Bölöni. That appearance followed reports that Ceaușescu was facing health problems. Medical sources said a serious condition had returned and that he had sought state support for expensive treatment, with one administration reportedly costing more than 7,500 lei.

Born in Bucharest on February 17, 1948, Ceaușescu is the first of Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu’s three children. He studied physics in Bucharest before continuing his education at Imperial College London, graduating in 1970. After returning to Romania, he worked at the Institute of Atomic Physics. During the December 1989 Revolution, he was arrested on December 25, the day his parents were executed, and was accused of undermining the national economy. He was released in August 1990.
