Van Aert uses knowledge from old triumph to win in Aalborg

Belgian cycling star Wout van Aert kicked off the PostNord Danmark Rundt with a victory in Aalborg. The win was a testament to his experience, drawing on knowledge gained from his overall triumph in the race back in 2018.

Van Aert, now 31, recalled that in 2018, he was less prepared for the opening stage's demanding finale. This time, however, he was better equipped, navigating a chaotic stage marked by crashes, crosswinds, and multiple attacks. He strategically conserved energy until the opportune moment.

The gap had become a bit large, so it required a lot over the bridge to close up to the group.

Ultimately, van Aert managed to rejoin the lead group, including Danish rider Søren Kragh Andersen, forcing an eight-man sprint. He found just enough energy to outpace his rivals. He will begin the second stage, starting from Jonas Vingegaard's hometown, in the coveted blue leader's jersey, having relished the enthusiastic reception from fans along the route.
