Vandals overpower guards, steal ₦1.8 transformer cable in Jigawa school

Suspected vandals have stolen 12 meters of armored cable from a transformer at Government Unity School in Ringim, Jigawa State, leaving the institution without power. The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, involved more than 10 individuals who overpowered the three security guards on duty before fleeing with the cable.

The stolen cable, measuring 75mm², is estimated to be worth between ₦900,000 and ₦1.05 million. This act of vandalism is the latest in a series of attacks on critical infrastructure in Jigawa, following recent recoveries of streetlight cables worth over ₦1.8 million in Hadejia.

More than 10 suspected vandals invaded the school, overpowered the security guards on duty and vandalised 12 metres of 75mm² armoured cable connected to the transformer before fleeing.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the incident. He stated that preliminary investigations revealed the suspects attacked guards stationed at different points within the school premises before carrying out the theft.

The Commandant described it as a criminal assault on critical national assets and infrastructure.

NSCDC personnel responded swiftly to a distress call from the school and recovered exhibits at the scene to aid their investigation. The Jigawa State Commandant of the NSCDC, CC Muhammad Ingawa, condemned the attack, labeling it a "criminal assault on critical national assets and infrastructure." He has ordered an intensive manhunt to apprehend all individuals involved and assured that they will be prosecuted.

The commandant also urged security personnel attached to schools and public institutions to remain vigilant and to immediately alert security agencies to any suspicious activities. Residents have been advised to report any suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest NSCDC office or other security agencies to help prevent and combat vandalism.
