Vaquerita reveals the hardest part of moving from wrestler to CMLL referee

Vaquerita found a new place in CMLL after an injury ended her career in the ring. The former wrestler now works as a referee, using years of experience as a fighter to supervise matches from a very different position.

“Moving on was difficult. It is not easy to stop wrestling or stop putting on your gear,” she told EL UNIVERSAL Deportes. Vaquerita said she suffered an injury in Japan and could not recover fully. She considered leaving wrestling, but accepted the company’s offer to become a referee.

The adjustment remained difficult despite her preparation. She said she became so excited during matches that she sometimes forgot to count, because she still had to break the instincts she developed as a wrestler.

Vaquerita also welcomed the growing recognition given to referees. “It is nice to be recognized. We know wrestlers are the center of the show, but it is a great gesture that our work is also recognized,” she said. She added that wrestling had provided financial stability to help her daughter and family.
