Vatican Cardinal Calls Lefebvrist Bishop Ordinations Schismatic, Urges Dialogue

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin on Wednesday described the unilateral ordination of four new bishops by the ultratraditionalist Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) as a "schismatic act in itself." He noted that episcopal ordinations without papal mandate break the Church's unity and incur specific sanctions, primarily excommunication.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Parolin expressed hope for resuming dialogue with the ultraconservative organization. "My hope is that, despite what happened this Wednesday, dialogue can be resumed and a solution can truly be found," he stated. He acknowledged the "grave wound" inflicted but emphasized the possibility of finding paths to resolve the issue.

The ordinations took place in Écône, Switzerland, before an estimated 15,000 faithful and observers, with the ceremony broadcast online in multiple languages. The FSSPX proceeded despite Pope Leo XIV's plea the previous day for the congregation to reverse its decision, warning of immediate excommunication.

Founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the FSSPX emerged in reaction to reforms from the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), which they viewed as a departure from the Church's traditional doctrine and liturgy. Parolin reiterated that the Second Vatican Council is a "milestone in the history of the Church that must be accepted and implemented correctly," referencing the FSSPX's objections to vernacular Mass, ecumenical dialogue, and increased lay participation.
