Vehicle Bomb Attack in Pakistan Kills 15, Including 12 Soldiers

A brazen vehicle bomb attack on a joint military and police checkpoint in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has resulted in the deaths of 15 people, including 12 soldiers and two police officers.

The attack occurred early Tuesday in the Tank district when militants attempted to breach the checkpoint. After an initial exchange of gunfire, the assailants rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the checkpoint's outer wall, causing a massive explosion. The blast also severely damaged the checkpoint facilities. In the ensuing firefight, the Pakistani military reported killing 12 militants and stated that a search operation is underway to apprehend any accomplices who may have escaped.

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a separate entity from the Afghan Taliban but ideologically linked, claimed responsibility for the assault. The group asserted that four suicide bombers were involved. This claim further fuels the ongoing dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding alleged militant sanctuaries within Afghan territory, which the Afghan Taliban government denies.

Recent weeks have seen a rise in such attacks targeting security forces in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Pakistan has repeatedly conducted airstrikes targeting militant groups it claims are operating from Afghanistan, leading to retaliatory actions from the Afghan side. In response to the latest attack, Tank authorities imposed a curfew from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time, restricting movement on major roads except for emergency vehicles, as the military vows to continue counter-terrorism operations.
