Venezuela and Netherlands Normalize Diplomatic Ties with New Ambassador Appointment

Venezuela and the Netherlands are embarking on a new chapter of bilateral cooperation following the official reception of credentials for the new Dutch ambassador, Carmen Gonsalves, by Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez. This diplomatic event signifies a normalization of relations after a period of political tension in 2024.

Ambassador Gonsalves presented her accreditation at the Miraflores Palace, accompanied by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia and Vice Minister for Europe and North America, Oliver Blanco. The meeting, which took place without immediate press statements, formalizes direct diplomacy after a significant diplomatic impasse in 2024. This impasse occurred during the post-election crisis when opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia sought refuge at the residence of the then-Dutch chargé d'affaires, Robert Schuddeboom, prior to his exile.

The restoration of diplomatic ties is further bolstered by the Netherlands' recent provision of technical assistance following the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. Foreign Minister Plasencia expressed gratitude for this gesture, highlighting it as a positive step in strengthening bilateral ties. The Venezuelan government views this renewed engagement as an opportunity to deepen their joint work agenda and reinforce historical connections between the two nations.
