Venezuela earthquake death toll hits 1,430; US aid arrives amid challenges

The devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 have resulted in a grim toll, with the death count rising to at least 1,430 people, according to Jorge Rodríguez, President of the National Assembly. The disaster has also left at least 3,238 individuals injured and displaced 3,142 families from their homes. In the aftermath, the nation has been subjected to at least 430 aftershocks, amplifying the crisis.

The coastal region around La Guaira bore the brunt of the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes, leaving vast areas in ruins. With limited government rescue teams, desperate Venezuelans have been seen digging through rubble with their bare hands. Aid organizations are sounding the alarm, emphasizing that the crucial 72-hour survival window for victims trapped in the debris is rapidly closing.

In response to the catastrophe, the first US aid flights have arrived in Caracas. A senior US administration official confirmed "great communications" with Venezuela's interim authorities on both political and military fronts. The US is working closely with these authorities to address immediate needs and establish logistical support for aid delivery.

Despite challenges, including damage to Simón Bolívar International Airport near Caracas, efforts are underway to increase assistance. One runway is operational, facilitating the arrival of mobile hospitals and more Starlink terminals. Two US search and rescue teams, each comprising 80 personnel, are actively involved in finding survivors. The official acknowledged that coordinating access to affected areas has been complex due to multiple international groups attempting to land and navigate limited ground logistics.
