Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,438

The death toll from two earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June has climbed to 6,438, official figures released yesterday revealed. This marks an increase from the 6,301 fatalities recorded last week.

Nearly two months after the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes hit Venezuela's coast on June 24, families and rescue teams are still actively searching for missing individuals beneath the debris. The quakes caused at least 190 buildings to collapse.

Authorities estimate that at least 60,000 homes were affected, with 24,000 rendered unsafe for habitation. Thousands of displaced residents are still living in temporary camps, facing severe shortages. Heavy rains over the weekend further exacerbated the situation, destroying tents housing earthquake victims in Caracas.

The government of interim President Delcy Rodriguez has pledged to provide new housing for those affected. However, only 335 homes have been provided so far out of a promised 4,000 units by the end of the year.
