Venezuela earthquakes death toll revised to 6,125

The devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June have claimed a revised death toll of 6,125 people, National Assembly Chief Jorge Rodriguez announced Monday.

The updated figure significantly surpasses the previous count of 5,546 deaths following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors that hit on June 24. The disaster primarily impacted the coastal state of La Guaira, where nearly 200 buildings collapsed.

Rescue efforts and family searches continue amidst the rubble, with approximately 17,000 people injured. Local authorities report around 1,400 people remain missing in La Guaira, though official government figures on missing persons have not been widely disclosed. Expert projections suggest the number of missing could be as high as 10,000.

Beyond the 190 completely destroyed buildings, over 16,200 structures have been deemed unsafe, forcing many residents to relocate. Almost 24,000 individuals in La Guaira and Caracas are currently residing in temporary shelters.

In response to the crisis, Venezuelan lawmakers unanimously approved a law on Friday that facilitates property rentals, aiming to assist those displaced by the earthquakes. This measure repeals previous anti-rental legislation. Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez stated that an estimated 400,000 homes could benefit from the new law, describing it as a "win-win" for tenants and owners. The government has pledged to provide 4,000 homes to quake victims by year's end, with a target of over 10,000 homes by 2027.
