Venezuela Qualifies for AmeriCup 2027 with Historic Victory Over Brazil

The Venezuelan women's basketball team has achieved a historic milestone, defeating Brazil for the first time in their history to secure a coveted spot in the AmeriCup 2027 tournament. The triumphant 71-57 victory took place in Zárate, Argentina, on August 6, propelling Venezuela into the continental championship set to be held next year in El Salvador.

Following this groundbreaking win against Brazil, Venezuela secured the second qualification spot for AmeriCup 2027, trailing only Argentina. This remarkable achievement also saw them advance to the semifinals of the qualifying tournament. Prior to their historic clash with Brazil, the Venezuelan team had also defeated Chile 62-51 on August 4, marking a clean sweep of their group stage matches.

While Venezuela awaits the identity of their semifinal opponent and the official match schedule, they are slated to compete in the next stage on Saturday, August 8. The qualification for AmeriCup 2027 represents a significant first for the national team under the guidance of head coach Luz Vargas, signaling a new era for Venezuelan women's basketball.

Throughout the game against Brazil, Venezuela demonstrated strong performance. They led 19-18 after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 39-28 by halftime, bolstered by effective zone defense and clutch free-throw shooting. Venezuela maintained control in the third quarter, leading 54-42, primarily through dominant defensive rebounding. In the final quarter, the team solidified their victory, with Daniela Wallen leading the scoring with 23 points, supported by Génesis Rivera (18), Brianna Herlihy (12), and Valeria Montero (4). Herlihy and Wallen were key in rebounding, while Montero led in assists.
