Venezuela's Chavismo and Opposition Agree to Renew Entire Supreme Court

In a significant development for Venezuela's political landscape, the ruling Chavista party and the opposition have reached an agreement to completely renew the judges serving on the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ). This accord marks one of the first tangible outcomes from the ongoing dialogue sessions, which are being facilitated by the United States with the goal of fostering a transition within the Caribbean nation.

Dinorah Figuera, the lead negotiator for the opposition delegation, announced the agreement, stating that both parties have committed to "activating a new nomination process for the renewal and designation of all magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice." This decision effectively restarts the process that the National Assembly initiated in May to replace some magistrates amidst a proposed reform of the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice, which also included increasing the number of judges from 20 to 32.

Following the agreement, the law governing the TSJ will undergo further reform. Figuera also explained that a judicial nominations committee will be renewed and expanded. Furthermore, a council will be established to review the credentials and qualifications of TSJ nominees, ensuring adherence to constitutional requirements, legal standards, and the established evaluation criteria.

The implementation of these agreements is set to begin this August with official announcements and concrete actions. The parties have committed to a continuous working mechanism to ensure strict compliance with each undertaking. This dialogue follows the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States in January, after which the government, led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez, began a series of institutional changes, including those affecting the TSJ. The dialogue, which commenced on August 6, is built upon principles of national sovereignty, good-faith negotiation, and the pursuit of benefits for Venezuela, alongside a commitment to political, peaceful, democratic, and constitutional solutions.
