Venezuela's Main Airport to Resume Operations in September from Temporary Terminals

Maiquetía International Airport, Venezuela's primary gateway, is set to resume commercial flight operations on September 1. The airport, which serves the capital city of Caracas, had been closed due to damage sustained from earthquakes on June 24. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines directly for updated flight schedules as operations will be conducted from temporary terminals.

The airport institute, IAIM, stated that the resumption of services is made possible through a process adhering to high standards of quality and utilizing the latest technologies. These temporary facilities are described as more than just infrastructure; they represent a "deep reconnection with the world and with our own," symbolizing the reunion of families and reinforcing Venezuela's openness to the future.

The temporary setup will include two departure and two arrival terminals, handling both domestic and international flights. These modular metal structures will be equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, waiting areas, medical services, and accessibility features for passengers with reduced mobility. The international departure terminal will span 4,300 square meters, with four gates and seating for 780 passengers.

Following the June earthquakes, which devastated the La Guaira region and caused significant loss of life, several airlines rerouted flights to Valencia and Barcelona. Cargo operations at Maiquetía had already resumed on August 5 as a preliminary step towards a gradual reopening. The airport's recovery is a significant step for the region heavily impacted by the seismic events.
