Venezuela thanks Putin's government for 'unconditional support' after earthquakes

Venezuela's interim government, led by Delcy Rodríguez, has extended its sincere thanks to Russia for its "unconditional support" in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24. The quakes resulted in at least 2,954 deaths and 16,592 injuries.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil highlighted on social media the appreciation for the humanitarian cargo and the arrival of experts in sanitary and epidemiological control sent by Moscow. "We want to express our most sincere gratitude to the Government of President Vladimir Putin and the people of the Russian Federation, as well as to the special representative of the Foreign Minister, Alexander Shchetinin, for their solidarity and unconditional support in these difficult times," Gil stated.

Following the earthquakes, Russian President Vladimir Putin had conveyed his "deepest condolences for the tragic consequences" of the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 tremors to Rodríguez. In a telegram published on the Kremlin's website, Putin requested that the Venezuelan leader convey his "deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims" and wished "a speedy recovery to all those affected by the natural disaster."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov noted that Russia would promptly consider any requests for assistance from Venezuelan authorities. Venezuela has maintained its relationship with its historical ally Russia, even as it has pursued closer ties with the United States following the apprehension of former president Nicolás Maduro.
