Venezuelan governor reports 3,938 homes undergoing rehabilitation after earthquakes

The Venezuelan government is actively engaged in rehabilitating 3,938 homes in La Guaira state, one of the regions most affected by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes on June 24.

The affected properties were classified with a 'yellow alert' following technical inspections, indicating non-structural damage. Governor Alejandro Terán of La Guaira explained that the rehabilitation efforts are focused on homes where elements like walls and masonry were damaged, but the overall structural integrity remains sound. "We are rehabilitating 3,938 homes throughout the state that have been classified, within habitability inspections, with the color yellow (minor damage). They did not suffer structural damage, but rather damage to the masonry," Terán stated.

The state administration continues to provide assistance to families who lost their homes during the seismic events. Governor Terán reported that more than 12,000 families are currently residing in 28 temporary camps established for the displaced population. "We are assisting more than 12,000 families," he said, referring to the shelters set up across La Guaira.

As part of the post-earthquake assessment process, authorities implemented a color-coded classification system for buildings to determine their risk level. Structures marked green were deemed habitable, yellow structures required repairs and technical monitoring, and red structures were classified as high-risk and remain off-limits.

Official figures reveal the significant structural impact of the earthquakes. National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez reported that technical brigades have inspected 43,679 homes since the emergency began. Of these, 41,624 showed some form of damage. Specifically, 25,325 were classified as habitable (green), 9,866 were under restricted use (yellow), and 6,433 were declared high-risk (red). The World Bank has estimated the direct physical losses from the earthquakes at $19.6 billion, warning that a prolonged reconstruction could hinder the country's economic recovery.
