Venice Collects Over 5 Million Euros in Tourist Entry Fee Experiment

Venice has concluded a 60-day experimental tourist entry fee, collecting over 5 million euros from visitors. The fee, which ranged from 5 to 10 euros, was implemented on weekends and holidays between April 3 and June 15. This initiative aimed to manage the flow of tourists and mitigate the impacts of over-tourism in the historic city.

During the trial period, approximately 650,000 entry tickets were issued. City authorities reported that initial analysis of tourist flow monitoring indicated a reduction in visitor numbers on days when the fee was in effect. This suggests the fee may have served as a deterrent for day-trippers, particularly those visiting for only a few hours.

The fee applied to tourists aged 14 and over who did not stay overnight in local accommodations, as hotel guests already pay a tourist tax. The cost was 5 euros for those who registered their visit at least three days in advance, and 10 euros for others. Fines for non-compliance ranged from 50 to 300 euros, with controls in place to ensure adherence.

The city's new mayor, Simone Venturini, who previously championed the entry fee, has proposed increasing it to 30-50 euros on certain days. He believes a higher fee would be a more effective tool to discourage short-term visits and better manage the city's resources. Venice has long grappled with the challenges posed by mass tourism, and this fee system represents a unique global effort to address these issues.
