Venomous Snake Found Inside High School Football Player's Helmet

A high school American football player in Central Arkansas had a terrifying encounter when he discovered a venomous cottonmouth snake inside his helmet during practice at Maumelle High School.

The student felt an unusual movement inside his headgear after warm-ups and brought it to an assistant coach. Upon inspection, a 2-foot cottonmouth was found hidden behind the helmet's padding. The snake was reluctant to leave, requiring police officers to pour water into the helmet to force it out into a bag.

It was unreal. You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real.

Animal services technicians arrived, identified the pit viper as a deadly cottonmouth, and safely relocated it to a wooded area far from the school. Cottonmouths are known to be the second-most-venomous snakes in Arkansas. Animal services director Chris Davis commented on the close call, stating the player was "fortunate he was not bitten" after wearing the helmet for nearly an hour.

The incident prompted the head coach to remind his team to thoroughly inspect their equipment for any potential dangers before use. The player, shaken but unharmed, continued practice with a different helmet.
