Veraguas students keep folkloric drum alive on path to national contest

Young talents in Veraguas, Panama, are keeping traditional folklore alive through the rhythmic beats of the folkloric drum, as demonstrated at the Ricaute Villarreal 2026 Regional Intercollegiate Folkloric Drum Competition.

Students from primary, pre-secondary, and secondary schools across the province gathered to showcase their skills and passion for Panamanian traditions. The competition served as a platform to select Veraguas's representatives for the national folkloric drum contest.

Participants performed the 'tambor norte,' a Veraguan rhythm, including its regional variations. The event saw enthusiastic participation from 11 educational centers, with students demonstrating not only musical talent but also a deep pride in their cultural roots.

Cristian Mendoza from the Ministry of Education's (Meduca) Arts and Culture department noted the strong integration of folklore in schools and the students' eagerness to preserve cultural expressions. José Luis Concepción, Meduca's regional deputy director in Veraguas, emphasized that such activities are crucial for strengthening national identity, stating, 'The folkloric drum is not just music and dance; it is the essence of being Panamanian.'

The competition highlighted the importance of these events in fostering artistic capabilities and promoting local talent. Winners from Veraguas will advance to the national competition scheduled for July 17 in Panama Province, aiming to represent their region with pride and continue promoting one of Panama's most emblematic folkloric expressions.
