Veritas win inaugural NBA University tourney in Lagos

Veritas University emerged victorious in the inaugural NBA REC University Tournament, defeating the University of Abuja 41-36 in a closely contested final. The tournament, held at the University of Lagos Sports Centre, brought together eight university teams from across Nigeria for two days of competition.

The event saw teams including the University of Lagos, Lagos State University of Education, Veritas University, University of Ibadan, Lagos State University, Lead City University, Afe Babalola University, and the University of Abuja compete. After the group stages, Veritas, ABUAD, UNIABUJA, and UNILAG advanced to the semi-finals. On the final day, the University of Lagos secured third place by defeating ABUAD 57-50, paving the way for Veritas's championship win over UNIABUJA.

Beyond the on-court action, the tournament featured halftime activations that included fan giveaways, dance performances, and musical sets from Nigerian artists Taves and Samad. These elements provided fans with an engaging experience beyond the basketball games. ABUAD's Anthony Chioke was recognized as the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The NBA REC is the league's recreational basketball platform designed for individuals aged eighteen and above, aiming to enhance basketball experiences at university, community, and adult levels in Nigeria. This tournament was organized in collaboration with Future Concerns Nigeria Limited and Munch It. Notable attendees included government officials, sports administrators, and entertainment figures, underscoring the event's significance in promoting basketball development in the country.
