Veteran actor Kola Oyewo is dead

Veteran Yoruba actor and academic Chief Kola Oyewo has passed away at the age of 80. His death was announced by colleagues and confirmed by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, who shared the news with a heavy heart.

Oyewo died after a brief illness, according to a statement from his family. He is remembered for his impactful roles, particularly his portrayal of "Odewale" in Ola Rotimi's "The Gods Are Not to Blame" and his performance in the film "Saworoide." His career spanned decades, leaving a significant mark on Nigerian theater and film.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father. Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo. He was a wonderful man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched the lives of many.

Beyond his acting prowess, Oyewo was a respected figure in academia. He began his professional acting career in 1964 and later joined Obafemi Awolowo University, where he rose to the rank of senior lecturer. After retiring in 2011, he continued to contribute to the field as the head of the Department of Dramatic Arts at Redeemer's University and also worked at Elizade University.

Born on March 27, 1946, Oyewo pursued higher education in dramatic arts and Yoruba oral literature at Obafemi Awolowo University. He furthered his studies at the University of Ibadan, earning Master of Arts and doctorate degrees in Drama. His family expressed gratitude for his life, legacy, and the positive influence he had on many, asking for prayers and support during their time of mourning.
