Veteran Taiwanese Entertainer Chou Lin Dies at 73

Veteran Taiwanese entertainer Chou Lin (周麟) passed away at the age of 73, found deceased in his rented apartment on June 15. His funeral was held on June 20, with his elder sister, Chou Yen-tung, presiding over the ceremony. Several friends from the entertainment industry, including actors Liu Shang-chien and Tien Wa, attended to pay their respects and bid farewell to the performer.

Chou Lin's life was characterized by significant dramatic turns. At 54, he married his girlfriend to take responsibility for her pregnancy. However, the marriage lasted only three years, after which he discovered his wife's infidelity. Demonstrating his commitment to face-saving and loyalty, Chou Lin chose not to confront his wife, and during the divorce, he left her with a 170-ping villa and two luxury cars, returning to Taipei with only NT$70,000 (approximately $2,150 USD).

In his prime, Chou Lin was a prominent figure in Taiwan's entertainment scene. He signed with CTV in 1973 and simultaneously hosted five programs at the height of his career. He was best known for co-hosting "Happy Fax" with Chen Mei-feng, often referred to as "Taiwan's Most Beautiful Auntie." He also generated dating rumors with actress Chang Ling during the filming of the drama "Fierce Sword Flower." His popularity extended to both mainstream entertainment and, according to reports, connections with both legitimate and underworld figures, indicating a period of significant influence.

However, Chou Lin's later years were marked by financial struggles. His business ventures failed, depleting his savings and a considerable portion of his sister's savings, which led to a period of estrangement between them. To make ends meet, the former show business mogul took on a humble role, sharing a stall in Taipei's Nanmen Market to sell handmade meatballs. Many elderly customers recognized him and expressed surprise and joy, but he always handled the situation with composure.

Chou Lin, remembered for his loyalty and dramatic life experiences, has now made his final curtain call. In accordance with his straightforward personality, his family and friends, including Liu Shang-chien, will hold a flower burial ceremony for him on Yangmingshan, allowing him to rest peacefully and with dignity.
