Veteran Vietnamese artists Bao Quoc and Kieu Mai Ly reunite for comedy after 20 years

Veteran artists Bao Quoc and Kieu Mai Ly brought laughter to festival-goers in An Giang, marking their reunion on stage for a comedy performance after more than two decades. The beloved duo, known for their chemistry, captivated the audience at the Ba Chua Xu festival.

Bao Quoc, who has been performing less in recent years to spend time with family, expressed his joy at reuniting with Kieu Mai Ly for a "tau hai" (comedy) show. "It's been decades since I performed for the people of An Giang. This time, fate has brought us together for a reunion with the audience here who once loved Bao Quoc," he shared. The pair collaborated to write and rehearse their comedic skits, interspersed with traditional melodies and cải lương (Vietnamese folk opera) excerpts.

The performance was a highlight of the festival, with the audience showing continuous support through applause. Many attendees approached the artists before and after the show to express their admiration and take photos. Bao Quoc was visibly moved, stating, "It's been so long since Bao Quoc rediscovered the feeling of happiness among the people in the countryside. I'm touched that the audience still loves us as they did back then."

Their professional and personal bond spans over 50 years, having starred together in numerous famous cải lương plays during their time with the Thanh Minh – Thanh Nga Troupe and later at the Tran Huu Trang Theatre. They also performed together in Bảo Quốc's comedy group, touring across the country. Their mutual respect and affection extend beyond the stage, with Kieu Mai Ly consistently attending gatherings hosted by Bao Quoc and his wife when they visit Vietnam. For this An Giang trip, Kieu Mai Ly traveled with Bao Quoc's family, and they also took the opportunity to explore local attractions, including the bustling Chau Doc market.
