Vicente Carrillo 'El Viceroy' faces October hearing in NY as plea deal talks continue

Mexican drug trafficker Vicente Carrillo, also known as "El Viceroy," is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on October 20 in New York. This date was set by federal Judge Joan Azrack after prosecutors and Carrillo's defense team requested more time to finalize negotiations for a potential plea agreement.

During a technical hearing, both sides reported "productive" progress in their discussions regarding a guilty plea. However, they indicated that further time was needed to work out the details. Carrillo, 63, who has been detained in Brooklyn since his extradition last year, appeared at the hearing in standard prison attire.

Despite pleading not guilty to all charges last February, Carrillo and the prosecution initiated plea negotiations to avoid a trial. Judge Azrack has granted several extensions for these discussions. The prosecution has stated it will not seek the death penalty, leaving a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for Carrillo.

Carrillo, who inherited leadership of the Juárez Cartel after his brother Amado Carrillo, "El Señor de los Cielos," died, faces serious charges. These include continuing criminal enterprise, conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States, using firearms in drug offenses, and money laundering. He and associate Rafael Caro Quintero were extradited from Mexico in February 2025 to face these charges in the U.S.
