Video shows rapid night growth of Bald Range fire near Summerland

The Bald Range wildfire near Summerland, British Columbia, demonstrated alarming speed in its growth Friday night, consuming property and endangering lives. Unedited video footage captured the fire's rapid ascent up the hillside, illustrating the swiftness with which it spread after igniting around 5:30 p.m.

The fast-moving flames led to the destruction of homes and trapped individuals, prompting an immediate and intensive response. Premier David Eby acknowledged the tireless efforts of first responders, wildfire crews, search and rescue teams, the RCMP, local community members, government leaders, and volunteers who worked through the night.

"The stories that are starting to come out are heroic. Many people put themselves at risk to save others. We thank them for their courage and for their commitment," Eby stated on Saturday. He emphasized that the primary focus remains on saving lives and supporting ongoing rescue operations.

By 3 p.m. on Saturday, the Bald Range fire had expanded to cover 10,340.7 hectares. The dramatic growth, captured in a 45-second video showing the fire's progression, underscores the volatile nature of the wildfire and the challenges faced by those battling it.
