Vienna's Stadionbrücke bridge reopens early after modernization

Residents of Vienna can now enjoy early access to the modernized Stadionbrücke bridge, which has reopened to traffic a full week ahead of its planned schedule. The vital connection between the Leopoldstadt and Landstraße districts is now accessible, with further enhancements for public transport set to begin soon.

The bridge's modernization, which commenced in February 2025, aimed to bring the 82-meter-long structure up to contemporary standards. "With the now completed modernization of the Stadionbrücke, we have created a future-proof connection between the 3rd and 2nd districts for public transport, cycling, and individual traffic," stated Mobility Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ).

Significant structural improvements were made during the renovation. The roadway has been reorganized to centralize tram tracks and accommodate bus lines. A dedicated, protected two-way bike path, nearly four meters wide, has been added. Motorized traffic will have one lane heading towards Leopoldstadt and two lanes towards Landstraße.

To prepare the bridge for tram operations, extensive construction measures were implemented, including reinforcing main and cross girders and installing a new drainage system. Special protective beams were also added near the A4 highway. While most work is complete, final minor tasks will be finished by autumn without impacting traffic flow. The extended tram line 18 is scheduled to begin using the bridge on September 5.
