Vietnam Chess Federation Responds to FIDE Over Fee Misappropriation Allegations

Vietnam's Chess Federation has issued a statement to address allegations of financial impropriety concerning FIDE coaching courses. The international chess body, FIDE, had previously requested an investigation into unusual fee collection practices for two training programs held in Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City in March and April 2026. Reports indicated that over 100 participants' fees were directed into the personal bank account of Nguyen Minh Thang, the federation's vice president and general secretary, rather than the official organization account. FIDE confirmed it had not received any official payments, leading to a temporary suspension of certifications for Vietnamese participants. In response, the Vietnam Chess Federation clarified that the fees were initially channeled through Mr. Thang, who was officially authorized to manage and receive funds for the events. The federation stated that Mr. Thang was responsible for covering operational costs, with any remaining balance to be remitted to the federation's account after final accounting. Regarding the discrepancy in FIDE receiving funds, the federation explained that Vietnamese law requires specific documentation and valid invoices from partners for international currency transfers. They asserted that they fulfill all obligations to FIDE but that the process requires time to comply with financial and banking regulations. FIDE has reportedly only issued an invoice for the Hai Phong course, which the federation is in the process of settling.
