Vietnam launches "Digital Literacy Summer" to empower citizens in the digital age

Drawing inspiration from the historic "Ánh sáng văn hóa hè" (Summer of Cultural Light) campaign, which saw university students bring literacy to remote areas nearly 40 years ago, a modern iteration is emerging: the "bình dân học vụ số" (digital literacy for the masses) summer campaign. This initiative aims to harness the energy of youth during their summer breaks to impart vital digital skills. It seeks to replicate the spirit of the past—spreading knowledge and empowering communities—but in the context of today's technological landscape, where digital proficiency is the new key to accessing opportunities and participating fully in society.

The need for such a program is evident. Despite Vietnam's rapid digital advancements, significant 'digital deserts' persist. Many elderly citizens struggle with online public services, vulnerable workers face cybersecurity risks, people with disabilities encounter barriers to technological access, and those in rural areas lack essential digital knowledge. A recent study indicated that nearly a quarter of respondents felt uncertain about using digital technologies in daily life. This 'digital divide' is not merely a technical gap; it represents a growing social inequity that, if left unaddressed, could create an invisible barrier in an increasingly digital society.
